Henry Esson Young was born in Quebec. He was educated at McGill University where he received his medical degree in 1888. He moved to Atlin, B.C., where he practiced medicine from 1901 to 1903. In 1903 he was elected MLA to the B.C. Legislature and in 1907 was appointed Minister of Education and Provincial Secretary. He played a prominent role in the establishment of the University of British Columbia in 1908. In 1915, he was appointed Secretary of the Provincial Board of Health, a position he held until his death.
