Biographical history
William Henry Ladner (1826-1907) was born in Cornwall England, the son of Edward and Sarah Ellis. He immigrated to the United States with his father in 1848. His brother Thomas joined them and after their father's death in 1851, William and Thomas journeyed overland to the California goldfields. In 1858 the brothers headed for British Columbia and the Cariboo Gold Rush. William's initially profitable packtrain and freighting business went bankrupt as the gold rush waned. He then turned back to farming, pre-empting land in the Delta along Chilukthan Slough in 1868. William Ladner's farm, Frogmore, was his focus and became the base for work in the local community. William worked for the establishment of basic community services, including the first post office and school, and served the community as Reeve of the Delta Municipal council for fifteen years between 1880 and 1906, as local police magistrate, and in the provincial legislature from 1886 to 1890. He sold Donald Chisholm the land for the town of Ladner and donated land for All Saints Anglican Church. William married Mary Booth in Victoria in 1866. They had four children, Ida Harriet (1866-1892), Sarah Louise (1868-1930, m. F. Howay), Paul Edward (1869-1944, m. Winnifred Seamon) and Delta Mary (1871-1956, m. W.J. Watson). Mary died in 1896 and William remarried in 1897 to Mrs. McLellan of Clinton.
Custodial history
Scope and content
Fonds consists of a ledger and photocopies of William Ladner's crown grants to land in Delta. The ledger was used for several purposes between 1870 and 1887 which reflect some of the several roles William played in the community: farmer, school district trustee, and police magistrate. The ledger contains copies of minutes of meetings of Trenant School District trustees held in 1874, the earliest existing records for the Delta school district.
