    Biographical history

William (Bill) Smith was born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1954. At age 16, he started working in a Scottish coalmine; first as a pit boy on the surface, then as a pony driver, haulage man and finally as a face miner. Around the age of 20, Smith emigrated to Alberta to work in the mines in that province. Around 1984, Smith moved to Nanaimo where he became the underground foreman and later the manager of the Wolf Mountain Mine. The Wolf Mountain Mine opened in 1982 but closed by 1987 because of poor coal markets. After the mine closed, Smith and his family owned and operated a restaurant until his retirement in 1983.
