The Howe Sound Mission or Circuit was established in 1891, becoming at union in 1925 a mission or pastoral charge of the United Church. The current name of the charge is West Howe Sound Pastoral Charge, although Howe Sound was used earlier as well. Centred at Gibsons Landing, the Methodist circuit included Bowen Island. After 1925 the latter became a separate charge, but West Howe Sound continued to include other points besides Gibsons, namely, Granthams Landing, Hopkins Landing, Roberts Creek, Sechelt and others. From the 1970s, the pastoral charge consisted of Gibsons United Church and St. John's United Church at Davis Bay. In 1997, the two points became separate congregations, ending West Howe Sound Pastoral Charge. The congregation at Gibsons became formally organized with the construction of a first church ca. 1910. The congregation carried various names: Gibsons Landing Methodist Church, Gibsons Landing United Church, Gibsons Memorial United Church and the current Gibsons United Church. St. John's United Church grew out of interdenominational services in the 1940's culminating in the United Church purchase of St. John's in 1954. No longer active congregations include Granthams Landing where a building was erected in 1931 and sold in 1943; Port Mellon which closed in 1973; and Roberts Creek which disbanded in 1975.
