History

Ethyl Beryl Straiton was born in Vancouver in 1908. She worked for the B.C. Electric Company and often visited her aunt and uncle, Louise and Richard Coltart, in Enderby during the summer months. Here she met Percy Wamboldt; they were married in 1942 and the following year they purchased Valcairn Farm from the Coltarts. They shipped cream to NOCA Dairy in Vernon, and, following the installation of electricity in 1947, they shipped fluid milk to NOCA. They sold the farm in 1967. During the winter months Beryl took journalism correspondence courses from Victoria. From 1964 to 1971 Beryl created two-minute scripts for local radio programs entitled 'NOCA Provider's Program: NOCA Salutes Pioneers'. The programs were directed at farmers, with tips on new farming methods, a discussion of current issues and a salute to local people involved in the dairy industry. Beryl was editor of the 'Cream Collector' from 1967 to 1974. In 1965 she was commissioned to publish a history of NOCA, which was registered as the Shuswap-Okanagan Dairy Industries Cooperative in 1925, titled 'The History of S.O.D.I.C.A.'. In 1965 Beryl also wrote 15-minute radio programs about people and events in early British Columbia titled 'Pioneer Tips and Tales'. She wrote articles for the 'Okanagan Historical Society Reports' from 1966 until 1974, including a short history of NOCA and an article on Valecairn Farm. Beryl died in Vernon in 1999.
