Biographical history
Frederick Coate Wade (1860-1924) was born in Ontario and educated at the University of Toronto (B.A. 1882). In 1886 he was called to the Manitoba Bar, practicing in Winnipeg until 1897. In 1887 he acted for the U.S. Department of Justice in the investigation of Legare's claims for compensation for his part in the surrender of Sitting Bull. In Winnipeg, Wade was the President of the Young Liberal Association and was active in educational administrative circles. In 1897 he was appointed by Lord Aberdeen to inquire into the management of the Manitoba Penitentiary. Also in 1897 he was appointed Clerk and Registrar of the Supreme Court of N.W.T. for the Yukon. As Crown Prosecutor, he represented the Minister of Justice in the administration of criminal justice, and in 1898 he was appointed legal advisor to the Yukon Council. During his years in Dawson he also created a large private practice. After his arrival in Vancouver in 1902, he resumed the practice of law, being appointed K.C. Here he was the first president of the Canadian Club of Vancouver and of the Juvenile Protection Association, vice-president of the Provincial University, and a Park Commissioner. In 1903 he was appointed counsel to help prepare the Canadian case to be presented before the Alaska Boundary Tribunal. Wade was an editorial writer for the The Globe, 1882-1883, and for the Manitoba Free Press, 1886-1887; and in Vancouver he was prominent in founding and contributing to The Sun. He produced articles and pamphlets on many subjects, historical, educational, and patriotic. In 1918 he was appointed Agent-General for B.C. He died in England in 1924.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of private and official correspondence, photographs and maps, and a large number of published items and clippings. There are papers concerning the Yukon (1893-1959) and Dawson (1879-1902), the Alaska Boundary case (1902-1956), the Canadian flag controversy (1907-1912), juvenile offenders and their protection (1894-1917), research for the federal case re: Point Grey Military Reserve (1911-1918), Vancouver municipal and public affairs (1912-1927), and miscellaneous papers (1887-1960). Published items include works by Wade as well as publications of the Canadian Club, government publications and political tracts. There are also two bound volumes, one containing correspondence, programmes and clippings re: General Wolfe and the dedication of the Canadian Memorial to Wolfe at Greenwich Park, the other containing photographs and prints of various portraits and statues of Wolfe.
