        History

Walter Tyrell Shatford opened a general store on the main street of Vernon in 1891. He was soon joined by his brother, S.A. Shatford. By 1893, Walter had opened a branch at Fairview. In 1895, S.A Shatford opened his own store, specializing in women's clothing. In 1896, Walter expanded again with a branch store at Camp McKinney, then again in 1897 with a branch in Slocan City. By 1902, Walter had sold the Camp McKinney store to the Cosens Bros., and by 1904, he had closed the Slocan City branch. He moved to Penticton in 1905 and began construction on a store in Hedley. That same year, he closed the Sandon branch and, by 1907, had sold the Vernon store to F.C. Cooper and C.J. Christian.
