Biographical history
The first newspaper in the Okanagan, the Vernon News, was founded by Angus K. Stuart and W.J. Harber on May 14, 1891. A year later, they sold the business to George G. Henderson and Ainsley Megraw. Henderson and Megraw ran the business together until November 1893, when Megraw returned to his home in Ontario. Henderson's new partner, Price Ellison, joined the partnership soon afterward and the Vernon News Printing & Publishing Co. was born. John A McKelvie also joined the paper, succeeding Mr. Megraw as editor. Mr. Henderson remained as manager of the paper until just before the turn-of-the-century. The new manager, F.J. Baker, was later succeeded by Louis J. Ball, who continued as manager until 1925. Mr. McKelvie, who had replaced Mr. Megraw, developed into one of the best editorial writers in B.C. and was a major contributor to the success of the newpaper. His other occupations, such as jail warden and federal M.P., often took Mr. McKelvie away from his editorial chair, but he remained the paper's editor until his death in 1924. W.S. Harris, an experienced newspaperman, succeeded McKelvie in 1925, acting as manager and editor until 1943. His son, Frank Harris, took over as editor of the paper under the new business title of The Vernon News Ltd. In 1969, Frank Harris sold the newspaper to the Thompson Publishing company who ran the business until June 1996 when, due to decreasing circulation and low revenues, the 105 year old newspaper business ceased publication. When it originally started, the Vernon News was published once a week, on every Thursday. By October 1954, the newspaper was publishing twice a week, on every Tuesday and Thursday. By 1973, the Vernon News had become the Vernon Daily News.
