Biographical history
The organizational meeting of the local Women's Institute was held on March 31, 1916. Thirty women joined at the first meeting, and the motto 'For Home and Country' was decided upon. Because of the war, the Institute was not long in finding activities, mainly in a social vein. Their first acquisition was a piano and kitchen equipment. Revenue was obtained from equipment rentals, membership fees, a per capita government grant, dances, and through the sales of home cooking, plants, etc. Their war effort consisted of entertainment fo rthe soldiers in training, donations to the Red Cross, and the Prisoners of War fund, sending care packages overseas, and the donations of library books. Vernon schools benefitted from the Women's Institute's bir house competition, school nurse funding, and May Day celebrations. Donations were made to the hospital, and a child and baby clinic was set up. The Women's Institute activities lessened after the war, but the involvement in health, education, and May Day celebrations continued until the Institute gave up their charter in the late sixties, citing declining membership and the advanced age of members as the main reasons. On his death in 1942, Mr. George Minty had left his horse-drawn carriage to the Women's Institute for use on May Days. The coach was donated to the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives in 1966. The remaining members joined the Coldstream Women's Institute.
