History
The British Columbia University Act of 1908 was an act to establish and incorporate a University for the Province. The University Act provides for a Chancellor, a Convocation, and a Board of Governors whose function is to manage the University’s administrative, property, and business affairs. The Senate formed to administer academic matters at the University. Before the University Act, colleges affiliated with McGill, Toronto and McMaster Universities provided third level education in BC.
In 1915, UBC began its existence at the former McGill University College adjacent to Vancouver General Hospital. In the beginning, UBC inherited McGill staff and its curriculum in arts, science and engineering. Point Grey had been selected in 1910 as the site of the UBC Campus. The Provincial government set-aside land for the development of the University. Development of the institution began in 1914 but was later delayed by the outbreak of World War I. It was not until 1925 that Point Grey was officially opened.
Today UBC is one of North America’s largest public research universities. There are two primary campuses in Vancouver and in Kelowna BC.
