Thomas Charles Sorby was born at Wakefield, Yorkshire County, England, and studied architecture in London. Sorby emigrated to Canada in 1883 and worked for several years in Montreal and Vancouver. In 1887, he came to Victoria and began to design both residential and commercial buildings. He also worked on plans for the development of Victoria's Inner Harbour and port facilities.
Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds consists of three scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and one architectural sketch. Scrapbooks document Sorby's work in Victoria, primarily his proposals regarding the development of the Inner Harbour and James Bay Seawalls. Clippings also relate to technological developments, such as fireproof building materials, which influence architectural development. The architectural sketch is a proposed plan of the Parliament Buildings of British Columbia.
