Biographical history
Thomas Herbert Butters was born in 1869 at Portsmouth, England. While his brothers followed the sea, T.H. decided to head for the New World. As a young man, he spent some time in the mining fields of Idaho and Washington, before heading south to the Argentine in South America. He left the Argentine to follow the gold trails to the Yukon. In May 1891, he arrived in the North Okanagan and decided to settle in Lumby. There he started a large scale dairy farm. Over the next few years, Butters managed to build up one of the most extensive acreages and dairy herds between Lumby and Shuswap Falls. For years, he was one of the biggest shippers of cream to the Vernon Creamery. Mr. Butters was also a leading community figure. For two years he was president of the Lumby Fall Fair, and was an active member of the Knights of Pythias for 25 years. He retired in the late 1920's and between 1934-1935, disposed of his extensive holdings in Lumby. Following an extended holiday to California and Mexico, he bought a home in Victoria where he resided until his death in 1940, at the age of 71. He was pre-deceased by his wife in 1937, and survived by a daughter and son.
