        John Work (1792-1861) enrolled with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1814 and reached the Pacific Coast in 1824, where his duties led him to explore the Rocky Mountains, B.C., the Queen Charlotte Islands, B.C., the Skeena River, B.C., and as far south as the Stanilaus River in central California. From Fort Vancouver in Washington State, he was assigned to command Fort Simpson, B.C., until 1849, when he was transferred to Fort Victoria, B.C. In 1853, he was appointed by Chief Factor James Douglas a member of the Legislative Council of Vancouver Island.
