Biographical history
Stanley Triggs, former curator of the Notman Photographic Archives, McCord Museum was born June 3 1928, in Nelson, B.C. His father, William Alfred Triggs was a purser on the C.P.R.'s B.C. Lake and River Service and his mother, Violet (Mawer) Triggs was the daughter of W.H. Mawer, a commercial gardner. Stanley Triggs grew up surrounded by music, photography and an extended family with a love for the outdoors. Active in sports like swimming and hiking, as a young man Stan Triggs gravitated towards an occupation that would enable him to work outdoors and in the late forties and early fifties worked for the BC Forest Service in the Lardeau/Duncan valleys. Stan Triggs left the Lardeau in 1953 to go to the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara but returned every summer until 1956, when he finished school. He worked with Bob Wallace, the Patrolman for the area as well as for private logging contractors such as Casey Jones in drainages like Howser Creek and Glacier Creek. Triggs was well liked and went by the nickname "Trigger", a name given to him by Vic Weber. He was accompanied in the bush by his faithful companion, Peter, a Newfoundland/Husky/English shepard dog. Througout the time Stanley Triggs was working in the Lardeau/Duncan he was recording the people, the places and the lifestyles of the valleys with his camera. Always interested in history, he studied the folk songs and oral histories of the pioneers as well as capturing their images in a series of portraits. Stanley Triggs married Dorothy Perkins in June of 1956 and had three children: Robin, born May 19, 1957, William, born December 31, 1958 and Edwin, born in 1961. A musician who played the mandolin, mouth organ, guitar and button accordion, Triggs recorded an LP entitled Bunkhouses and Forecastles: Songs of the Northwest, produced by Folkways records in 1962. The LP included a tribute to Bob Wallace, "The Lookoutman in the Sky", based on a poem by Harold Smith, a local trapper. In the fall of 1956, Stanley Triggs decided to enroll at UBC to pursue a degree in Fine Arts and Anthropology. Dorothy and Stan divorced in the early sixties and in 1966, Stanley Triggs married Louise Demers of Montreal. After a two year stint as an itinerant folk singer, he was hired by the Notman Archives and started work December 5, 1965 retiring twenty eight years later. Louise and Stanley live in Hemmingford, P.Q. and have five children: Fayne, born August 4, 1966, Elayne, Nov. 19, 1967, Carveor, March 28,1969, Catherine, Dec. 23, 1970 and Emily, March 12, 1977. Triggs has been dedicated to the preservation of BC's photographic heritage and on his retirement in 1993 from the Notman Archives and his subsequent visit to Nelson the following year, he donated the records to the Nelson Museum.
Custodial history
Throughout the years, as Triggs worked with the collection at the Notman he recognized the need to preserve East and West Kootenay photographic heritage. Stanley Triggs acquired the Bob Wallace sousfonds from Wallace himself, was given the Jake Ludwig collection by George Coletti and purchased many of the images in the historical collection at garage sales and auctions over the years. The Jimmy Allan sousfonds was purchased from the estate. A sampling of portraits done by Stan Triggs in the time period he worked in the Lardeau and attended Brooks Institute of Photography can be found in series 2 (People of the Lardeau.) By nature of his interests, Stan became the custodian of the family photographs and albums.
Scope and content
The Stanley Triggs fonds is an eclectic mixture of family photographs, historical images on glass plate negatives, glass lantern slides, albumen prints, stereographs and postcards as well as Triggs's own work and the photographs of his friend and colleague, Bob Wallace. Stanley Triggs also purchased local collections at auctions, the Jimmy Allan sousfonds being one of them. The photos document the region from the East and West Kootenays although the Jake Ludwig collection contains images of San Francisco, California and Skagway, Alaska among other locales in and around BC. The Gold Rush, mining, sternwheelers and railways are the subjects of many of the historical photographs. The fonds is arranged in 3 series: 1. Stanley Triggs - Personal memorabilia and family records 2. Stanley Triggs - People of the Lardeau 3. Stanley Triggs - Historical records collection. The records of three other sousfonds and a collection make up the remainder of the records. 1. Bob Wallace sousfonds 2. Jake Ludwig collection 3. W.A. Triggs sousfonds 4. Jimmy Allan sousfonds. The Bob Wallace sousfonds contains 9 series: 1. Riverboats 2. Steamboats and others 3. Bridges 4. Log cabins 5. Other buildings 6. People 7. Landscapes 8. Miscellaneous 9. Addenda. The W.A. Triggs sousfonds contains two series: 1. Family photograph albums 2. Sheet music collection. The Jimmy Allan sousfonds has not been processed.
