After graduating from Surrey High School, Stan joined the Surrey Leader in 1936. He became the News Editor and Columnist for the paper in 1941. Stan enlisted in the Canadian Air Force in 1943. After being demobilized, he returned to the Surrey Leader and worked as Editor and Secretary of the company from 1948 and finally became its owner and publisher. Stan sold the paper to Hacker Press in 1978 but he continued as News Editor until his retirement in 1984. In local political affairs, Stan was appointed as one of the four Fence Viewers of Surrey in 1959. From 1986 -1990, he was a Surrey Councillor on the Surrey Non-Partisan Association slate. He was also one of the founders of the Surrey Electors' Team in 1990. Besides his journalist profession and political life, Stan was a community builder. Stan's community work started at the age of 18 when he became secretary-treasurer of the Surrey Centre Community Hall Association. He later became involved with the Surrey Athletic Hall, Surrey Amateur Athletic Association, and was an executive member of the Lower Fraser Valley Exhibition Association for more than 20 years. Stan's other community service included periods with the Surrey-White Rock Community Resources Board, Cloverdale Board of Trade, Cloverdale Jaycees and Surrey Historical Society. In 1992, he re-edited the Surrey Story, Fern Treleaven's history, first published in 1978. Stan was also a supporter of the agricultural community and the secretary treasurer of Colebrook, Mud Bay and commissioner of the Parks and Recreation Commission in 1969 and chairman in 1970.
