    Biographical history

St. John's Presbyterian Church was first organized at a meeting at Lord Roberts' School in the West End of Vancouver on December 14, 1902. On September 6 1903, a new Sabbath School Hall was opened for public worship, and was dedicated on November 1 of that year. St. John's Church itself was dedicated on October 6 1907. In 1925 St. John's voted to enter church union, and became St. John's United Church, though a significant minority voted against union, withdrawing as a result of the vote and forming Central Presbyterian Church. St. John's United Church also included the members of the neighbouring First Congregational Church, which had also voted to come into church union. The First Congregational Church building on Thurlow and Pendrell Streets was used by the continuing Presbyterians after church union. On October 29 1974, the sanctuary of St. John's United Church was destroyed by fire. From 1976 to 1981 St. John's United was a part of a two point St. Andrew's-Weasley-St. John's Pastoral Charge, but the two congregations did not amalgamate, and in 1981, St. John's again became an independent Pastoral Charge. A new church building was opened and dedicated on October 25, 1981.
