Biographical history

St. Ann's School, Douglas, Alaska, was opened in 1895 by the Sisters of St. Ann as a service to students who came across Gastineau Channel to attend St. Ann's School, Juneau. For the 1895-1896 school year, the Sisters traveled from Juneau each Monday morning and returned to Juneau after classes on Friday. A building called "The Bear's Nest, served as the school building, until the construction of a school in 1896. The story of the Douglas school is interwoven with the history of the Juneau establishments and the opening of St. Ann's Hospital, Douglas. The Sisters withdrew from Douglas in 1920.
