Ernest (Ernie) Skyrme was born in England in 1876 and immigrated to Canada in 1895 from Herefordshire, England. He served in the Boer War with the 17th Troop, Transvaal Corps from 1901 to 1902. Upon returning to the Okanagan he worked with manager George Heggie as foreman of the Stepney Ranch. In 1910 he transferred with Heggie to the L & A Ranch, where he served as foreman until retiring in 1918. Ernie married Isabella Turner in 1913; they had one son, Ernest Archibald. In 1912 Ernie purchased Hazelmere Farm in Grindrod with his brother, Thomas Skyrme. Ernie joined his brother in 1918 to develop the 222 acre dairy farm. Progressive farmers, Ernie with his son Ernest was the first in the North Okanagan to use a magnetic milking machine, cream cooling system and milking parlour. Ernie passed away in 1948.
