Biographical history

In February 1945, the Sisters of St. Ann agreed to a temporary contract with the territorial Governor of Alaska, Ernest Gruening, to staff a sanatorium, organized in the Skagway army barracks. Many of the Aleuts uprooted from the Aleutian Islands as a precautionary measure during World War II were found to have tuberculosis. When heating problems necessitated a change, the tuberculosis sanatorium staff and patients were transferred by the North Star to Sitka, Alaska. The Sisters ended their involvement with the sanatorium on July 1, 1947.
