    Administrative history

The Shuswap Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star was formed September 22, 1921 in the Leonard Hall. The names presented on the Petition for Dispensation included: Mrs. Sophia Donnelly, Miss Dorothy Donnelly, Mrs. Jessie Campbell, Mrs. Jessie Irwin, Miss Eva Ireland, Mrs. Elizabeth McGuire, Mrs. Etta Beer, Mrs. Elizabeth Page, Mrs. Annie Laura Johnston, Mrs. Clara Newnes, Mrs. Adella Hanna, Mrs. Florence McKim, Mrs. Martha Harbell, Mrs. Lila Wilcox, Mrs. Martha Lacey, Mrs. Henrietta Greenwood, Mrs. Maria Greenwood, Miss Gwendoline Campbell, Mr. Frank Wilcox, Mr. Henry Harbell, Mr. C.S. Ireland, and Dr. C.H. Irwin.

The name was chosen unanimously "Shuswap", after the lake and thought to be the First Nation's name for "shimmering waters." Most popular fund raisers included bridge parties and bake sales.

Associated with the Masons, the Order was dedicated to charity, truth and loving kindness. Emblems and symbols included the Golden Rule, Golden Link and the Star. The Golden Rule adopted by the group "symboliz[ed] sisterly and brotherly love." In 1981, cancer became a priority cause, and the group had a great interest in the Shuswap Lake General Hospital. The chapter surrendered its charter in 1990, due to a lack of membership.
