    Administrative history

The Save Richmond Farmland Society formed in 1986 as a response to oppose City Council’s decision to rezone Terra Nova, a 320 acre parcel of land in the north-western corner of Richmond. The Society worked to collect signatures for a petition of opposition which they presented to council during a hearing on Richmond’s Official Community Plan, in late 1986. The Society grew to over 1000 paid members and raised significant funds to take their fight to the Supreme Court of Canada. On August 16 1990, the Court upheld the legality of council’s decision and area was rezoned.

    Custodial history

The records were donated to the Archives in 2012 by Marion Smith, a key figure in the Society.
