Dates of existence

Currently, Saltspring Island United Church Pastoral Charge consists of only one appointment, Ganges United Church. The history of the charge, however, includes a wider scope of activity that originated with the Methodist Church in the 1860s. From the 1860s until 1899 when Saltspring Island became a separate circuit, the Island was part of Nanaimo, Maple Bay, and Cowichan-Saltpring circuits. In 1925, the Saltspring Island Circuit became part of the United Church, and has since that time constituted a Pastoral Charge in Victoria Presbytery. The Saltspring Circuit and Pastoral Charge included various congregations and preaching points throughout its history. A church was first built at Burgoyne Bay in 1887 to serve the entire Protestant population, although under Methodist administration. In 1905, a second church was constructed at Vesuvius. It was relocated to Ganges in 1926, which has since been the centre of the charge. The Burgoyne United Church congregation is no longer listed as an appointment after 1980, although the building still stands.
