Biographical history

Stephen Allen Spencer was born in New London, Connecticut, ca. 1819. He came to the West Coast about 1858, and worked in the Cariboo goldfields before moving to Victoria. In the 1870s and early 1880s, Spencer operated a photographic studio in Victoria. For several years, Spencer was in partnership with Oregon Columbus Hastings, another photographer. About 1887, Spencer moved to Alert Bay where he managed a cannery for the next fifteen years. Spencer later retired in Victoria and died in 1911.
