Biographical history
Reverend James A. Wood was born in Urbana, Ohio in 1855. The family moved that same year to Peterborough, Ontario. James attended Peterborough Collegiate Institute and entered the ministry in 1879. He was ordained as a minister in the Methodist Church in 1882. That summer he travelled to Victoria and started missionary work at Bella Bella and Bella Coola. From 1882 to 1916 when he retired to Salmon Arm, Rev. Wood worked as a minister on Vancouver Island, the lower mainland, and many cities and towns in the interior of B.C. He was placed in charge of the new Methodist Church in Vernon in 1893, staying there until 1895 when he moved on to Revelstoke. He married Margaret Jane Sweet in 1885 and they had six sons and two daughters. Rev, Wood died in 1916 while visiting in Armstrong.

Fonds consists of photocopies of the personal records of Reverend James A. Wood from 1890-1916. Includes copies of his personal diaries, financial records, and correspondence. Of particular note are the records from 1893, when the reverend spent time in Vernon and area working with the natives and community members.
