Biographical history

The R.B. McLean Lumber Company, owned and operated by Robert B. McLean and his three sons, Walter, Philip, and Arnold, moved to the Alberni area in 1926 and established a major sawmill operation at the townsite of McLean Mill at Beaver Creek near Port Alberni, B.C. It was also involved in local logging operations to keep the mill supplied and established some agricultural operations in the Alberni Valley. The McLean family had earlier managed several sawmills on the east coast of Vancouver Island through McLean Brothers Timber Company at Qualicum Bay and Union Bay and the McLean and Sons Lumber Company at Cumberland, B.C. The R.B. McLean Lumber Company ceased mill operations in 1965, although some farming activities were carried on until MacMillan Bloedel acquired the McLean property in 1983. The site of the mill is now the McLean Mill National Historic Site.
