Biographical history

The Provincial Superior (also known as Mother Provincial, or more latterly Provincial Leader) has been the official head of the Provincial Administration since its inception in 1891. Even prior to the creation of St. Joseph's Province, the Mere Vicariale served many of the same functions as the Provincial Superior after 1891. The Provincial Superior's authority is laid down in the Constitutions and Rules of the Sisters of Saint Anne, article 116-119.2, 1928, stating that she is invested with personal authority and has the responsibility of administering the province so as to help the local communities and local superiors in their office. The Provincial Superior is responsible for the assignments of the sisters of the province while respecting the rights of the General Superior in this matter. She is appointed to the position by the General Superior in consultation with the sisters for a term of three years, renewable to six years, whereupon, she is relieved for at least one year. The Provincial Superior is accountable to the General Superior for the fidelity of the province to the Constitutions and Rules, to the capitular decrees and the directives of the General Superior. The Provincial Superior convenes a council of four sisters which passes enactments for approval by the General Superior and her council. The sisters who have held the office of Mother Vicarial or Provincial Superior are: 1859-1881, Mother Mary Providence; 1881-1892, Mother Mary Ann of Jesus; 1892-1893, Mother Mary Providence; 1893-1901 Mother Mary Anne of Jesus; 1901-1908, Mother Mary Angel Guardian (Bourbonnais); 1908-1914, Mother Mary des Cinq Plaies; 1914-1917, Mother Mary Charles; 1917-1923, Mother Mary Philip Lynch; 1923-1929, Mother Mary Gabriel; 1929-1931, Mother Mary Dorothy; 1931-1934, Mother Mary Leopoldine; 1934-1941, Mother Mary Mark; 1941-1947, Mother Mary Mildred; 1947-1950, Mother Mary Ludovic; 1950-1953, Mother Mary Dorothea; 1953-1959, Mother Mary Luca; 1959-1965, Sister Mary Angelus; 1965-1971, Sister Mary Gladys; 1971-1980, Sister Eileen Kelly; 1980-1986, Sister Kathleen Cyr; 1986-1992, Sister Freida Raab; and 1992- , Sister Mary Ellen King.
