History
John J. Porter came to Revelstoke from eastern Canada as a young man in the 1880s. For the duration of the diary (1887 to 1891) he worked as a labourer for the Canadian Pacific Railway and occasionally for other employers. City tax rolls indicate that Porter resided for a time a 410 Mackenzie Avenue, where the diary was found. By 1920, he no longer resided in Revelstoke.
