Biographical history
As a result of a call by C.W. Hadwen at the 1897 B.C. Fruit Growers' annual meeting, the provincial government set up a system of local farmers' institutes in any locality where fifteen farmers petitioned for one. Despite a slow start, by 1914, there were over eighty farmers' institutes throughout the province. The Okanagan Farmers' Institute was one of those eighty, having been officially incorporated 20 August 1914. In 1917, representatives of the farmers' institutes met to found the United Farmers of British Columbia. On 26 July 1920, at a general meeting, the secretary of the Okanagan Farmers' Institute proposed that 'an amalgamation be effected with the United Farmers of B.C.'.
