    Biographical history

As municipalities in British Columbia began to grow and flourish in the late 1800's and first half of the 1900's, people living in rural areas complained about their lack of representation. As a result, provincial legislation was adopted in 1965 providing for the establishment of regional districts, suitable for the special needs of each region. Regional boards are composed of electoral area directors (elected by voters in each area) and municipal directors elected by municipalities from elected council members. Regional district services are varied and can include fire protection, emergency programs, recreation services, library service, water supply, and waste disposal. The Regional District of North Okanagan, one of 28 regional districts in B.C., was incorporated 9 November, 1965. It consists of 13 directors representing 6 municipalities and 5 electoral areas, based on population. The services provided by the Regional District to the citizens of the North Okanagan are as follows: building and fire inspection, community parks and recreation programs and facilities, ambulance services, animal control, some cemeteries, drainage and fire protection, aquatic weed harvesting, noxious insect and weed control, library services, airport, tourism, economic development, waste disposal, water systems, and regional transit.
