        History

The New Westminster Horticultural Society held its first organizational meeting on March 28, 1934, at New Westminster City Hall. This meeting was held to discuss the feasibility of establishing a horticultural society in the city and what would be needed to fulfill this idea. The first official meeting of the society was held on April 18, 1934, where the first elections were held. At this first meeting, the practice of requesting that the Mayor of New Westminster be the Honorary President of the society was established, a practice that continues today. The constitution states that the purpose of the society is the advancement of horticulture in all its branches, particularly the beautifying of our homes. In conjunction with this purpose, it sponsors many local garden shows, for both its membership and the community. The society has also participated in many garden shows throughout BC, most notably the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE), where it has won many awards. The New Westminster Horticultural Society celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 1984.
