    Biographical history

    The Nanaimo Mine Rescue Station reported to the B.C. Department of Mines, Office of Inspector of Mines. It provided training and certification of mine rescuers. The course consisted of 20 hours in the smoke chamber, 16 hours for training in a mine-like obstacle course, and two test sessions of two hours each. During the 1940s, Richard Nichol was the instructor.

    The fonds consists of correspondence, examination record, mine rescue team lists and annual reports, annual reports (1914-1936) to the Chief Inspector of mines, correspondence (1922-1951) consisting of reports from and letters to the Vancouver Mine Safety Association, the Inspector of Mines and the Mine Rescue Station in Nanaimo, examination questions for third class candidates (1934-1936), the examination record (1915-1934, 1936-1951) listing the activities and dates of each student and number of laps made, pulse and condition of trainee, and mine rescue team lists which document note date, team number, mine number, and names of miners.
