Biographical history
The Nanaimo Literary Institute was created in 1863 to promote reading and discussion of literary issues. The first president was C.S. Nichol. In 1890, when the Institute was in financial difficulty, its books were transferred to the YMCA, which offered to keep a free reading room.
Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds consists of constitution (1863-1864), cashbook (1878-1886), Debating and Elocution Class minutes (1880-1891), and minutes (1880-1885). The minute book for the Debating and Elocution class also records rentals of the Hall by community groups (1887-1892).
