    Biographical history

    William Banks Monteith was born in Scotland and came to Canada in 1891. He worked as an accountant in Toronto and New York before coming to Victoria in 1908. From 1920 to 1953, he was the publisher, general manager and secretary of the Victoria Times newspaper. He also served as president of the Vancouver Island Coach Lines and Vancouver Island Freight Company and also headed an accounting firm. In 1953 he moved to Vancouver, where he died in 1958 at the age of 87. He was survived by his son John Monteith. John Monteith was born in Victoria and attended St. Michael's University School and Oak Bay High School. In the 1940s, he became the manager of the Royal Dairy Company. He moved to Vancouver around 1950. He was married to Sheila Monteith and had two sons, Ian and Michael. He was a member of the Union Club of British Columbia from 1946 until his death in 1990 at the age of 77.

    Scope and content

    The fonds consists of family photographs, school annuals and report cards, miscellaneous records and books. Family photographs consist of images of the Monteith family (including William Banks Monteith), friends, St. Michael's University School students and scenes of Victoria. School annuals consist of magazines and annuals from Oak Bay High School and Victoria College. Report cards are from John Monteith's years at Oak Bay High School. Miscellaneous records consist of business cards, newspaper clippings and other ephemera collected by the Monteith family. Books consists of histories of St. Michael's University School and the Union Club of British Columbia.
