History

Gwen Baker was born in 1917 and came to Lytton in 1937. She taught school in the Community Hall for 4 months, until the 'new' school was ready. (The 'new' school was always referred to as the 'Annex' when the present school was built. The Annex was eventually torn down.) Gwen's wages were 800 dollars a year, the minimum wage at the time was 720 dollars per year. Gwen first taught kindergarten. The school needed a piano, so she held card parties in the sitting-room of the Hotel, at 25 cents a head. The student council helped out, and they eventually raised 400 dollars and bought their piano. This same piano is still in use at the elementary school (1997). Gwen met Wilson Miller and married him in 1941. Wilson Miller attended Business College, then joined the RCAF in 1941. Attended pre-enlistment at Seaview School until June 1942. He came to Lytton in 1937 and started work at BR's General Store. He married Gwen in 1941, and earned 95 dollars a month. (He actually received a letter from the Government telling him he could not pay taxes because he was not making the required 100 dollars per month.) After the war [ca. 1949], Wilson bought the BR's General Store, and sold the store in 1962.
