Biographical history

Mayer's Red House in Nanaimo, B.C., was owned and operated by Alexander Mayer. Mayer arrived in Nanaimo in 1861 with two large trunks of goods to establish a store. Because the Hudson's Bay Company had a monopoly, he was forced to sell on street corners and out of the Miners Hotel. Later he purchased a log building and painted it red, becoming known as "Mayer's Red House - The Pioneer Store". Mayer left Nanaimo for Portland in 1880.
