    Biographical history

    John and Eva Maxey operated "Crossgar', a farm in East Wellington for many years. They had one son, Bert, who became a provincial police officer. The Maxey farm was the site of the first organized horse racing in the mid-Vancouver Island area. The race track was known as Maxey Park and was opened in 1933 by Lt. Governor J.W. Fordham Johnson. The Maxeys were killed in an automobile accident in 1970.
