    Biographical history

Malcolm Francis Crane was born in London, England in 1946, and emigrated to Canada with his family in 1951. He was educated at Kerrisdale School, Point Grey Junior High School, and Magee High School in Vancouver. He subsequently attended UBC from 1964 - 1967, majoring in drama and creative writing. As a student, Crane acted in student theatre productions, and was on the staff of the student literary publication, "Talon". In the early 1970s, Crane's professional interests were in the area of general social welfare and human rights. He was a volunteer, and briefly, a project co-ordinator at SPARC (Social Planning and Review Council of B.C.). In 1974, he co-founded SEARCH (Society for Education Action Research and Counselling on Homosexuality). From this period onward, Crane became involved in numerous gay/lesbian organizations. He was actively involved in the Gay/Lesbian Pride Festival from 1978, and was instrumental in founding the PFA (Pride Festival Association) in 1984, and the PCF (Pride Community Foundation) in 1991. As director of the PFA, he also participated in the activities of the IALGPC (International Association of Lesbian/Gay Pride Co-ordinators), including the co-ordination of the 1989 Interpride Conference, held in Vancouver. He was also involved in other organizations such as the Police/Gay Liaison Committee and the Vancouver Gay Community Centre. In addition, he produced and hosted episodes of the TV show "Prism" - a community affairs program for the gay/lesbian community. Malcolm Crane died in 1993.

    Custodial history

    Scope and content

This fonds is a chronologically-ordered body of records from the personal and work life of Malcolm F. Crane; it also represents a significant sub-group of the records of certain organizations such as SEARCH, PFA, and PCF. Personal papers include correspondence, school assignments, certificates, yearbooks, memorabilia from travels, photographs, and a variety of mostly unpublished literary and academic works including poems, short stories, plays, novels, and essays. Some of these works explore the theme of homosexuality. Records dating from after Crane's death include health records, documents relating to his funeral service and memorial bench, obituaries and tributes, and news coverage of his death (video). Work papers reflect Crane's involvement in a variety of human rights and gay/lesbian organizations. Larger bodies of records include: correspondence, minutes, reports, briefs, and newsletters from SEARCH (Society for Education Action Research and Counselling on Homosexuality), 1974-1983; correspondence, minutes, memos, reports, and conference papers (especially relating to "Coalition on Children" and "Conference on the Family") from SPARC (Social Planning and Review Council of B.C.), 1976-1981; records of the PFA (Pride Festival Association) relating to the organization and running of the annual festival including minutes, financial statements, speeches, artists' contracts, event registrations, publicity, plans, photographs etc., 1984-1990; and records of the PCF (Pride Community Foundation - an umbrella organization, and the PFA's successor), including both festival records and those related to other programs such as the Witness Assistance Program and the television show "Prism", 1991-1993. Also in this category are papers of the IAL/GPC (International Association of Lesbian/Gay Pride Co-ordinators), particularly those relating to the organization of the 1989 conference ("Interpride '89") in Vancouver, which was hosted by the PFA. Smaller bodies of records include correspondence, minutes, financial statements, constitution, and newsletters from the GLL (The Gay Leisure Link), 1979-1993; festival-related records from the PWCC (Pride Week Co-ordinating Committee, predecessor to the PFA), 1984; correspondence, notes, and clippings from the P/GLC (Police/Gay Liaison Committee), 1982-1993; minutes and reports of the Outreach Committee, Ryerson United Church, 1976-1977; correspondence, minutes, reports, financial statements, and newsletters of the VGCC (Vancouver Gay Community Centre), 1979-1993; and various other organizations. The fonds also contains publications on general social issues (including government publications and works published by SPARC), and publications on gay/lesbian issues and interests. In addition to photographs, non-textual materials include festival buttons, video cassettes (notably episodes of "Prism", a gay/lesbian community affairs program, news coverage of the Pride Festival, and home videos), and audiocassettes on various topics.
