        History

"Paddy Mackie was a renaissance man, with a love for culture, history and, most of all, people." [Morning Star] Patrick Flyton Mackie, born at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital in 1922, was the youngest son of Hugh and Grace Mackie. Patrick's parents and uncle operated the Vernon Boys' Preparatory School in Coldstream, which provided Paddy with his British-style education and accent. Paddy graduated from Vernon High School in 1938, and began teaching in his parents' school. Unfortunately, his first teaching career was short-lived, as two years later, the war in Europe began and Padddy and his brothers left home to serve their country. During the war, Paddy served in the Royal Canadian Navy on a corvette which escorted convoys from St. John's Newfoundland to Londonderry, Ireland. When the war ended, Paddy decided to contine his education on a veteran's grant. He received a degree from UBC, and later travelled to Europe to study at the Sorbonne. Upon completion of his European education, Paddy spent two years teaching French in Dawson Creek, BC. He returned to Coldstream, took up residence in the family home, and began a 25 year teaching career at the W.L. Seaton School from 1955-1980. In the Vernon and Coldstream community, Paddy was well known for his involvement with cultural and historical organizations. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Vernon Community Music School, was a past-president of the North Okanagan Naturalists Club, and was involved with Amnesty International. He was also an ardent volunteer at the Vernon Museum, and served as a director of the local art gallery. Patrick Mackie died on July 31, 1999 at the age of 76.
