Born Mary Watson in Luthermuir, Scotland on September 28, 1922, Mary married David Macaree in to 49 and they immigrated to Canada in 1955. Mary went back to school and graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Library Science in 1963. From 1968 to 1985 (her retirement) she was the head librarian at the MacMillan Library at UBC. She died in 2008.
Mary Macaree was an avid hiker and member of the British Columbia Mountaineering Club. She joined the club in 1964 and was made an Honorary Member in 1975. Along with her husband, David, she researched and produced the hiking guides '103 Hikes in Southwestern British Columbia' and '109 Walks in B.C.'s Lower Mainland'. Mary drew the maps which were included in the early editions of the books.
