        William Leighton was born in 1854 in Benicia, California. He arrived in British Columbia at an early age and was educated in Victoria where he subsequently became a telegrapher for the federal government. In 1882, Leighton moved to Nanaimo where he worked as a bookkeeper for A.R. Johnson and Company. After that, he established his own real estate, insurance and mining business. In 1884, Leighton married Harriet (Hattie) Gough. They had five children: Frederick, Gladys, Clifford, Russell and William. Leighton was a member of the Freemasons, Ashlar Lodge No 3., the Woodmen of the World and the Fraternal Order of Eagles and served as the secretary of the Conservative Association and a school trustee. William Leighton died in 1931 and Harriet Gough Leighton died in 1963 in Oliver, B.C. at the age of 64.
