Biographical history

In 1936, Mrs. Alex McCulloch donated $1000 in her late husband's name to start a pipe band in Vernon. It was named the Kildonnan Pipe Band, after Alex McCulloch's family farm in Scotland. Uniforms were full Highland dress, with green and red tunics, kilts, and plaids in the MacBeth tartan. Alexander Rankin became the first pipe major, John McCulloch (son of Mr.& Mrs. Alex McCulloch) the pipe sergeant, Horace Foote the drum major, and Ted Kirk the leading side drummer. The band attended Highland Games and parades throughout the B.C. interior. In 1950, after having been inactive for a number of years, the band was reactivated by the Sons of Scotland Camp No. 166 (Kildonnan Camp). The McCulloch family donated the original uniforms to the new band. In the early 1960's, due to declining membership and a general lack of interest, the band was dissolved.
