Name of creator
John Sclater was born in Scotland in 1894. He earned his British Mariners' Foreign-going Certificate of Competency and sailed as an officer on cargo ships during the First World War. In 1919, he came to Canada where he commanded foreign-going merchant vessels from Atlantic ports. He became Port Warden (or Harbourmaster) in New Westminster, BC in 1928 and kept the port until his retirement on November 30, 1959. He began a private Marine Surveying business after his retirement. Sclater continued to live in New Westminster until his death in 1978.
The papers of John B. Sclater were donated to the New Westminster Museum by Mr. Frank McElgunn of Vancouver, in May 1978.

The John B.Sclater fonds consists of personal papers, correspondence, ledgers, survey reports, specification sheets, vouchers, and duty papers related to his activities as Port Warden and Private Marine Surveyor.
