James C. Peters commanded merchant ships from Liverpool to Bombay and China in connection with the East India Trade Company. He volunteered his crew to the Indian government during the Great Indian Mutiny and was assigned to the protection of the treasury at Karachi.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of diaries, journals, notes and log books, all written by Peters except the log of the vessel Earl Grey. The voyages of the Sarah and the Queen of the Seas are detailed. One notebook is of correspondence from Peters on the Esk to the Barque Valparaiso. The log of the Earl Grey is written by Master John Sharp, detailing voyage from Liverpool to Valparaiso. Fonds includes letters to Peters from the Commander-in-Chief, India and from the Collector of Customs, Kurachee (Karachi). Fonds also includes charts of Indian Ocean, China, Africa, lighthouses in the British Isles, English Channel, Bay of Bristol and South America as well as Board of Trade wind charts. Also included is a plan of the Queen of the Seas, maps of England and Ireland, and an oil painting of the Queen of the Seas.
