Gogarty, Oliver St. John, 1878-1957The fonds consists of drafts of his works, including handwritten manuscripts, typescripts and carbon copies with sometimes extensive corrections of much of his published work and several unpublished titles; correspondence from personal friends and publishers; Goldring's letters to the editor; diaries and notebooks, 1903-1960; newspaper clipping files; and a Goldring biography file. Names of correspondents include: Richard Aldington, John Betjeman, T.S. Eliot, Emma Goldman, Aldous Huxley, W.S. Maugham, and Alec and Evelyn Waugh. The largest correspondence files are from Mary Butts, Ethel Mannin and Louis Wilkinson. Also included is a file of correspondence from Betty Duncan to Conal O'Riordan. She later became Goldring's first wife and the mother of his two children

1) En'am-i Serif [Turkish calligraphic manuscript].- consists of several chapters of the Qur'an, Arabic and Ottoman and Turkish prayers, calligraphic rondels and seals, hilyes, and miniature paintings of the Kaba, the Prophet's Mosque at Medina, his personal belongings such as his cloak, prayer beads etc., his hand and foot print and similar images. Special Collections had slides made of this manuscript. A second set of these slides is available in the Slide Library (History in Art Dept.).
2) al-Jazri, Mohammed. - consists of a single leaf from an 18th century religious manuscript, "Hassi Hasin" (Prayer and Contemplation). It is written in Arabic (probably in Turkey) in the Nashki hand. It may be an Ishmaeli text. It is illuminated, gilded and decorated with a floral motif.
3) Firdawsi. Shah Nameh. consists of a single leaf from an 18th century copy.
4) Koran. India. 17th -18th century?
5) Koran. China. 17th -18th century?
6) Maghribi Qur'an (Koran) Bifolium. Late 10th or 11th century. Kufic script.

Alford, NormanThe collection consists of letters from A.R. Orage, 1933-1934, manuscripts by Armstrong for "Focus" 21, "The Literary Digest", etc. (1945-1970) plus a review, a note, and a mss for "The Poetry Review" by G.S. Fraser, 1950-1952. Also included in the collection are enclosures from "Ten Contemporaries" [1932 & 1933]. These enclosures consist of research material and correspondence: re the publication of the two volumes, and the writers included in them.

Allen, Thomas, 1681-1755The fonds consists of four volumes of photographs, the first of which also contains drawings. The drawings commence in 1846 (done by family friend) and recommence in 1884 (done by JHA and friends). The final drawing seems to be 1890. The photographs cover the period 1884-1909. They begin in England and also cover Ireland, St. Helena, South Africa, and Scotland. Some have a military setting but some are scenic and social.

Additionally, there are drafts and fragments of other works (often on the versos of the previous drafts); several are by Sylvia Plath.
Hughes, Ted, 1930-1998The collection consists of a three vol. set of Shakespeare's Works (J. Payne Collier, Lupton Pub. New York, n.d.) which Malcolm Lowry has used as notebooks, as well as for annotations on the texts themselves. These volumes, given by Lowry to his friend George Stevenson, were used as a resource by Lowry, especially during the composition of Under the Volcano. The volumes include poems and jottings by Lowry on fly leaves and paste-downs and on p. 944. In addition, textual annotations by Lowry occur most heavily in The Tempest, Merchant of Venice, Timon of Athens and, to a lesser extent, The Sonnets.
