Al Neil collection
Collection · 1962 - 1994

The collection consists of audio and moving image recordings of performances by Al Neil and various musical ensembles that performed with him (Al Neil Trio, Al Neil Jazz Probe, Al Neil Quartet, and solo efforts). They include performances at the Vancouver School of Art, Simon Fraser University, The Western Front and others. The performances date from 1962 through 1989, although this collection contains CD and DVD copies (not the original recordings).


These copies were produced as part of the Al Neil Project, a 2005 collaborative effort between the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, New Orchestra Workshop, Coastal Jazz and Blues Society and the grunt gallery.

Alain Boire collection

The collection consists largely of research materials and notes created in the preparation of Boire's book "With Hearts and Minds" published in 2016. The remainder of the collection consists of materials collected by Boire from Caisse Populaire Maillardville Credit Union, as well as accumulated material pertaining to Boire's involvement in several community initiatives, such as the Maillardville Residents' Association, Maillardville revitalization and planning, and Place Maillardville.

Materials include correspondence, photographs, administrative records, interviews, reports, handwritten notes, clippings, advertising and professional materials, newsletters, research materials, prints, postcards, ephemera, a map, embossing seals, a lid from a glass milk bottle, and other documents. The collection also includes a manuscript copy of "With Hearts and Minds."

The fonds consists of Schroeder's literary manuscripts, radio plays, filmscripts, manuscripts by others, personal correspondence, financial records, and printed material which chronicle his development and contributions as a writer, journalist, broadcaster, editor, translator, and literary/cultural activist. Included among the subjects documented in the papers are: Schroeder's published and unpublished fiction and nonfiction works, including short prose, novellas, poems, translations, a prison memoir, literary columns, and feature articles; production of documentaries for the CBC radio show "Ideas"; publication of the literary magazine of translation "Contemporary Literature in Translation"; the author's nine-month prison sojurn; the founding of the League of Canadian Poets and the Writers' Union of Canada; and, the establishment of the Public Lending Rights Commission of Canada.

The fonds consists of photographs, transparencies, negatives, prints, slides, textual records and objects. Contents of the fonds primarily reflect First Nations cultures in British Columbia between 1960 and 1980, including the Haida, Coast Salish (formerly Burrard Reserve), Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka'wakw), Gitsegukla and Ans'pa yaxw (Kispiox) nations. Notable First Nations personalities and artists documented include Chief Dan George, Gerry Marks, Henry Hunt and Norman Tait. Contents also include: B.C. landscapes such as Gwayasdums (Gilford Island), Klemtu, Mamalilikulla and Uchucklesaht; First Nations children; First Nations exhibits, totem poles and installations at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and for the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka, Japan. The original accession was arranged in series according to Carter's published works which focus on specific localities, communities, individuals and subject matter, with additional series related to Carter's photojournalistic work and personal recordkeeping added in 2019 when an accrual was made to the fonds.

Fonds consists of records related to B.C. and Jessie Binnings’s correspondence with friends and colleagues overseas in Japan from 1959 to 1971. It includes correspondence with Bishop Kojo Sakamoto and members of his family. Letters are predominantly personal and are written by hand; several are painted using calligraphy. Other records include program brochures and news clippings for exhibits in Japan and North America, and scrapbooks assembled by the Binnings. These either commemorate various visits they took to Japan or the visits that their Japanese friends took to Canada.
