Collection is comprised of records accumulated as a result of the participation of the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre in a project entitled Writing Lives: The Holocaust Survivor Memoir Project. Writing Lives was a partnership between Langara College’s English and History departments, the Azrieli Foundation and the VHEC. For the project, students at Langara College worked closely with Vancouver-based Holocaust survivors to produce their written memoirs over the course of two semesters. In the first semester, students learned the history of the Holocaust. In the second semester, students interviewed survivors, transcribed the interviews and together with the survivors, completed written memoirs. In this fonds are the memoirs, administrative files and digital photographs produced during the two-year run of the project. Seven survivors participated in the first year of the project, from 2016–2017; five survivors participated in the second year of the project, from 2017 to 2018.

Collection is divided into three series: Memoirs (2017–2018), Administrative files (2016–2018) and Photographs (2017–2018).

Item consists of sound recordings of Debby Yaffe discussing her childhood, schooling and family life in California, including gendered family roles, expectations of femininity in the 1950s, university, marriage and life in Europe, her feminist consciousness raising experience in London, teaching high school in London, the differences between English and American societies, sex discrimination, radical feminist activities, restructuring of sexual relationships, life in Canada and involvement in the Women’s movement in Victoria, Status of Women Action group, Everywomens Books, disordered eating as feminist issue, work as a fitness instructor, abortion rights, impact on feminist awareness of the December 6, 1989 killings at École Polytechnique in Montréal, radical feminism, women’s lives in Canada and England, life as a lesbian, resisting dominant domestic relationship constructs, teaching Women’s Studies, feminist theory, and the Victoria Women’s Movement Archives.

The Debby Yaffe interview was conducted by Joy Fisher as a research project in the course History 358A, “Women in Canada,” taught by Dr. Lynne Marks, which covered histories of women in Canada from the era of New France to the present. Fisher’s resulting essay is entitled “Riding the Wave/ Watching the Wave: A Second Wave Feminist Talks about Gender Ideologies and her Life.”

The fonds consists of one file titled Interview Transcripts, which contains recorded interviews, transcripts, and printed copies of transcribed interviews of research done by Sharon Fortney towards her PhD thesis titled Forging New Partnerships: Coast Salish Communities and Museums. Forney's thesis explores what motivates Coast Salish communities to participate in museum representations; considers the legal implications of such representations with respect to aboriginal rights; and analyzes of the diverse experiences of Coast Salish individuals in specific museum projects and partnerships with the goal of progressing museum and community interactions along a path to equal partnership.

The audiotapes in the fonds contain interviews with Coast Salish community members and artists regarding museums. The CD-R contains transcripts of interviews and is located in the temporary CD storage box. Sharon Fortney's curriculam vitae, thesis abstract, and 10 interviewee consent forms are located in the case file.

Fonds consists of photographs relating to the personal life and recreational activities of Andrew Reid and extended family members. Andrew Reid and his friends were avid skiers and hikers and many of the photographs are of skiing at Hollyburn Ridge hiking in the North Shore mountains, or days on the beach in West Vancouver. The fonds also includes images of Alta Lake in Whistler, excursions to Bowen Island, the West Vancouver Tennis Club, the Royal visit of George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939, Andrew Reid's place of work, Forst's Radio and Appliance in North Vancouver, and its staff, as well as construction of the Lions Gate Bridge.
