Maps 1 and 3 relate to the Darién scheme, an attempt by Scotland to establish a colony called 'New Caledonia' on the Isthmus of Panama at the end of the 17th century (1698-1699). It was poorly managed and many colonists succumbed to disease. It was abandoned after a siege by Spanish forces in April 1700.
