Chute family fonds

The fonds consists of personal correspondence, legal documents, business licences, photographs, sound recordings and ephemera of Mr. and Mrs. Chute. Includes correspondence regarding purchase of museum building (restricted), museum opening (1995), legal documents, photographs including a series of 28 photos of the Royal visit in 1959, ephemera and one SF for Miss Tebbutt's correspondence (Miss Tebbutt became Peggy's mother). Also includes a copy of an Earlscourt apple box logo and sound recordings: including Preservation of Photographs (CBC, Feb. 22, 1989), CBC history program on Thomas Spence, NDP political party meting in Lytton, Indian music of Pacific North West, George clutesi, Indian stories by Mike Brown and Lena Dunstan, and Ordering of the Diaconate-A.W. Harding. Also includes 12 reel-to-reel tapes of recordings of Indian Education classes at Lytton Elementary School, and eleven photographs of the 1998 emergency food lift to Boston Bar. Includes swimming pool being rebuilt, CN swinging bridge across Thompson River, and two photographs of a mud-flood down Lytton's main street. Also group of men at a hospital function. Five slides of Niakia River rafting and one of Jade Springs from the air. Also 4 maps: one is a sketch of the homes on the westside of the Fraser from Lytton to Lillooet, one is a weather map (1954), and one is a 1952 survey map showing all rivers, creeks, mountains, reserves from Pavilion to Kamloops and from Douglas Lake to Keefers.

The missionary subscription lists include those of the Lower Fraser Circuit for the period 1914-1920, mainly listing subscriptions from the Coqualeetza Institute. Also, there are a few records of marriages in the civil register that took place in Alberni, B.C., most likely at the Alberni Indian Residential School.

Henry Wentworth Mist fonds

The fonds consists of Captain Mist's personal log of the HMS Sparrowhawk, 1868-1872, including correspondence to Admiralty as well as testimonials by native Indians on the Northwest coast. Fonds includes log of the HMS Havannah (1855-1859) in the Pacific Station. Mist was aboard as a Lieutenant.

During their time living in Bella Bella, the Houstons took many photographs of the lives of the Heiltsuk First Nation community documenting the day-to-day lives of the Heiltsuk First Nation as well as ceremonial activities. The color slides document the construction, painting, and launching of the Gi’wa, a Heiltsuk canoe which sailed with the Lootaas, the Haida canoe built by Bill Reid for Expo 86. Some of the slides document the welcome feast at Bella Bella in honor of the Haida crew of the Lootaas. The color slides also document several potlatches and wedding feasts held in the community hall, and the local Sports Day parade. Slides also depict the role of the fishing in the community, such as smoking salmon and processing roe. Other photos document gravestones on a nearby cemetery island, derelict canneries, petroglyphs and pictographs, totem poles and house posts, all in or near Bella Bella.

Fonds consists of matted prints of engravings made from sketches created by John Webber as official artist on Captain James Cook’s third voyage. Prints depict landscapes, animals, people, clothing styles, architecture, and events that were encountered on the voyage in places such as New Zealand, the Friendly Islands (Tonga), the Sandwich Islands (the Hawaiian Islands), Nootka Sound (Vancouver Island, BC), and Van Dieman’s Land (Tasmania).

The collection includes material relating to Alert Bay that was created or collected by Thomas and Mildred Laurie, as well as photographs and textual records created or received by James Barclay Williams, who bequeathed the records to Mildred Laurie. The collection includes a photo album, photographs, postcards, correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and a calendar. Photographs document Alert Bay and the surrounding area, including the B.C. Packers store, Christ Church, the native cemetery, St. Michael’s Residential School and Preventorium, Canada Packers, Hardy Bay, totem poles, a long house, and the Nimpkish Hotel. Photographs also document local events, including potlatches, weddings, an outdoor salmon barbeque, BC centenary celebrations in 1958, native ceremonies, and a visit by the Governor General.

The fonds consists of records created and collected by Harry B. Hawthorn in a number of different capacities: as researcher, professor, Dean of Anthropology and Director of the Museum of Anthropology. Textual records in the fonds include correspondence, transcripts, research notes and clippings from publications. Much of the graphic materials relate to Harry Hawthorn’s interactions with aboriginal communities as an anthropologist, a professor, and as the Director of MOA. Other images relate to his personal life, documenting his youth in New Zealand, his life as a father and anthropologist, and his later established professional roles.

Minn Sjolseth fonds

The fonds reflects Minn Sjolseth's artistic career and travels to First Nations communities throughout British Columbia and Alaska with her husband Anthony Carter. Contents of the fonds depict First Nations cultures in British Columbia between 1960 and 1980, including Haida, Coast Salish, Kwakwaka'wakw, Gitsegukla, Kispiox, and Nisga'a. Several of the contents depict notable figures, including Chief Dan George and August Jacks.

The fonds includes textual records including correspondence, ephemera, newspaper clippings; graphic materials such as photographs, slides, negatives, and transparencies that depict Sjolseth’s travels and artworks; and artworks produced by Sjolseth including paintings, drawings, and prints.

Fonds consists of audio, video, and visual materials created by Basil and Edythe Hartley. Materials include video footage of the Haisla people, which Hartley shot while working in Kitimaat from 1941-1944, a voiceover for the footage which Hartley’s widow, Edythe McClure, created in ca. 1983, a letter, and three photographs of Kitimaat people and landscapes. The three audio cassettes all contain the same 1983 recording.
