Louise Spratley fonds

The fonds consists of material relating to the professional and personal life of Louise Spratley who played an important role in the West Vancouver community as editor of the Lions Gate Times, special assistant to BC Federal Cabinet Minister the Hon. Jack Davis, freelance journalist, and consultant for the District of West Vancouver. The fonds also includes material relating to one of Louise's sisters, Hilda Cryderman, a B.C. teacher who gained national status as a strong advocate of women's rights and issues, and was a member of the Order of Canada.

The collection consists of materials gathered by Karl Ruppenthal as course aids for subjects taught mainly at Stanford University as part of the Transportation Management Program. The bulk of the collection consists of copies of transportation industry publications, published regulatory decisions and reports and related documents, and transcripts of addresses and speeches by other individuals, along with related correspondence and newspaper and magazine clippings. There are no papers in the collection generated by Ruppenthal himself, apart from copies of letters requesting materials from corporations and regulatory bodies, and some written notes. The collection is organized in series based on the following broad subject areas: Pipelines, Civil Aeronautics Board, Ocean Transportation, Case Leads (case studies for the Stanford course Business 380), Consulting with Consultants (conference), Australian Travel Material, Emergency Board Reports, Noise and Environmental Pollution, Transportation Co-ordination and Consolidation, Transportation Economics and Regulations, Rail Mergers, Rail Transportation Labour, Skyliner (TWA employee newsletter), Roberts Bank Superport, and Air California.

There are also records arising from Wood's participation in the "Pacific Northwest Review of Books" and copies of review articles (1977-78). Also included are materials (predominantly printed) from "Crossing Frontiers", a 1978 conference which brought together Canadian and American literary scholars, historians and writers to discuss comparative literature from the two "wests".

The university employment series includes curricula vitae, job applications, and self evaluation files which document Roberts employment history and her publications and committee work, etc. The university teaching series includes course outlines, take home exams, and student handouts which shed light on her approach to teaching. The grant applications and publications series together provide an overview of the range and direction of Roberts' research interests. While most of the series are based on record type, the Gertrude Richardson research and Leicester Peace Society Research series are arranged by subject and contain correspondence and grant applications; the Gertrude Richardson Research series also contains conference papers. The Women's movement and Peace movement series both contain correspondence, although some correspondence pertaining to them will be found in the miscellaneous and family correspondence series. While the miscellaneous and family correspondence series consist almost entirely of inward correspondence, both contain a few printouts of e-mail correspondence or letters from Roberts which shed light on her daily life and research projects. The Canadian Women Peace Activists series contains interviews about and with Canadian women who were peace activists before 1960.
