Salmon Arm Forest District fonds

Fonds is arranged into four series and consists of aerial photographs and negatives, paper maps, and overlay. Majority of photographs are black and white. Color photographs date between 1989 and 1990. A separate collection is arranged for use by silverculturists dating between 1984 and 1990. Photographs are color. Aerial photographs were taken by the Department of National Defense and later by the British Columbia government. Fonds includes air photograph map indices. These map indices show flight line location and numbering of aerial photos taken between 1952 and 1994. Fonds also includes forestry district overlays; enlarged aerial negatives and photos; map mosaics; recreation maps of areas from Chase to Revelstoke to Oyama, BC; grazing area permits and licenses on crown land; and Federated Co-Operative Operational Cut Block Plans.

The collection consists of maps of Hedley and other areas of the Similkameen Valley including subdivision maps, survey maps, forest cover maps, fire insurance maps, and mineral claims maps. Collection includes various plans of the Nickel Plate Mine (Kelowna Exploration Company) and architectural plans of mine houses (1936).

The fonds is comprised of photographs documenting the activities and concerns of the west coast fishing industry: fishing boats, fishing and fish processing, fish plants and canneries, special events related to the promotion of fish products, Adams River sockeye runs, traditional First Nations fisheries, sports fishing, research on salmon, salmon habitat destruction, and hatchery and fishways construction and operations. The pictures were taken all along the British Columbia coast from the San Juan fishing grounds on southwestern Vancouver Island to Prince Rupert. Included are photographs taken at salmon producing lakes and rivers in the interior of British Columbia. Some of the photographs originated at food shows in Europe and the Tokyo wholesale fish market. The fonds includes 12 films with fishing related topics plus a small amount of textual material related to the photographs.

Fonds includes records relating to the Creston Power, Light and Telephone Company, the Kootenay Valley Power and Development Company, various farmers' associations, and the Creston Board of Trade/Chamber of Commerce. The Theed Pearse Collection consists of 209 photographs and 417 slides depicting scenery and natural history of Comox Valley as well as travel photos of California and Europe. Collection includes some Pearse family photographs.

CAMC records primarily consist of records related to mining operations including construction, engineering, daily mining operations, administration of CAMC, tallies of extractions, labour and union activities, corporate events and visits by dignitaries. Townsite records are primarily visual representations of townsite construction, including the creation of health, education and community services including Cassiar's private hospital, school, library, as well as townsite images. Photographs include documentation of natural and man-made landscapes within the Cassiar region of Northern BC. Other holdings include a near complete run of Cassiar's community newspaper.

The ledgers note expenses for various operations in the mine and in the company owned premises in town. The letters and notes concern the purchase of explosives for the mine and discusses the Consolidated Cariboo Hydraulic Mining Company.

Types of subject areas found within this series include, but are not limited to: mine, plant, labour, and townsite operations at the company towns of Cassiar and Clinton Creek (including community activities associated therein and townsite development); construction of plant and mine buildings ; mines and equipment not owned by Cassiar Asbestos Corporation, but which are believed to have been used for operational research purposes ; aerial photographs ; company exploration of further mineral deposits outside of Cassiar ; official tours ; community images, promotional material ; executive portraits.
